MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Manufacturing is the unsung hero of the economy as the latest economic survey of manufacturing shows very strong growth.

I believe there are a lot of misconceptions about manufacturing, and four myths in particular that mean manufacturing doesn't earn the credit it deserves. The latest GDP figures show the ecnomy growing solidly - with manufacturing as a key driver. More on this below.

Blooming Good – PMI

Activity in New Zealand's manufacturing sector picked up in September, according to the latest BNZ - BusinessNZ Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI).

The seasonally adjusted PMI for September was 57.7. This was 2.5 points up from August, and the highest level of activity in the sector since January this year.

Manufacturing powerhouse of NZ growth

New Zealand's positive growth story continues - GDP figures show the economy growing solidly. Even more positive is the role that manufacturing is playing in our good news story.

The latest economic survey of manufacturing shows very strong growth. Manufacturing for the construction sector grew 9.5 per cent and meat and dairy product manufacturing grew by 8.6 per cent over the latest quarter. Migrants are among New Zealand's richest and most sophisticated consumers, a new study reveals.

72% of migrants consider themselves financially stable in comparison to just over 50% of New Zealanders, research conducted by HT Group and Windshift has found. Most migrants were young, highly employed and well educated with 65% holding a bachelors degree or higher - almost 30% more than Kiwis. More...

Health protection is the foundation on which good worker health is maintained - but New Zealand isn’t doing a very good job of keeping workers healthy. For instance, manufacturing workers are 25 times more likely to die of exposure to harmful airborne substances than from a workplace incident. Migration rules a sign of progress

Changes to Immigration NZ's permanent residence rules will help prioritise more highly skilled immigrants, says BusinessNZ.

The Government has announced a slight reduction in residence approvals for the next two years, along with a higher points requirement for the skilled migrants category.

BusinessNZ Chief Executive Kirk Hope says it's important that immigration settings allow the entry of skilled migrants while maintaining an overall level of migration that works for New Zealand.

"Increasing the points required by skilled migrants to gain residence from 140 to 160 will help sharpen the annual intake towards higher skilled people. More...
